If you’re going to gamble, Sun City is the place to do it.
And Team ATS Motorsport, aka the Young Guns, will be gambling on a strong finish in the Sun City 400, fifth round of the South African Cross Country Series (SACCS), which takes place at the popular North-West Province resort on September 15 and 16.
They’ve made the most of the six-week break since the last round to improve the performance of their rip-snorting Ford Ranger.
“We’ve done further development work on the shock absorbers and continue to move in the right direction,” confirmed Richard Leeke, at just 21 already a hardened veteran of national championship motorsport. “The goalposts are moving all the time and our Ranger is a much faster truck than it was at the beginning of the year and while we’re still the rookies of the Cross Country scene, we’re quick learners!”
Pretoria, South Africa, 7 September 2017 – Ford Motor Company today announced that the hugely popular Ford Ranger bakkie will be available in an off-road performance variant for the first time. The purpose-built, desert-racing inspired bakkie joins the Ford Performance family, as the new ‘Ford Ranger Raptor’. The Ranger Raptor will be coming to South Africa, with further information to be revealed in due course.
Designed and engineered to deliver an adrenaline pumping experience, Ford Ranger Raptor sports a head-turning exterior look that exudes toughness as well as a level of capability and off-road performance never before seen in the mid-size bakkie segment.
Sharing the same nomenclature as the F-150 Raptor, the world’s most extreme production bakkie, Ranger Raptor is in a class of its own among mid-size off-road performance vehicles.
Building on the success of the class-leading Ford Ranger, one of the best-selling bakkies in a number of markets, Ranger Raptor brings the thrilling off-road [...]
The ATS Motorsport Young Guns made the perfect start to the HMC Electrothread Rally, which ended in Bronkhorstspruit on Saturday August 19, by winning Friday’s 15-kilometre opening stage.
While one stage does not a rally make, it was what Richard Leeke and Henry Köhne expected and confirmed that they were on the pace, albeit with the prospect of a first-class duel ahead: arch-rivals Guy Botterill/Simon Vacy-Lyle were just 1.1 seconds adrift. Making matters more interesting was the presence of double national rally champion Hergen Fekken (partnered by the equally experienced and skilled Elvene Coetzee), who split the two youngsters with a time 0.7 seconds off Leeke…
By Saturday afternoon’s finish, however, the Young Guns had slipped to third overall, a result that – thanks to Botterill winning and Fekken finishing second – has also seen them lose their overall lead in the championship. They are now three points behind.
